Sir,
I have the honour to lay before you the following for your due consideration.
In my last, I applied to the Colonial Office with the request that they would kindly instruct the Crown Agents to assist in finding some suitable employment under a Civil Engineer in the Construction of a railway.
On July 15, I received a letter from the Crown Agents stating that Mr. W. R. Galbraith, Consulting Engineer to the London South Western Railway, will be willing to place me as an assistant under one of his Engineers on a railway construction, providing I pay a premium of £50 to him.
On August 4, I submitted the following to the Crown Agents for approval, which, however, has been rejected, although, in my opinion, the arrangement is far superior to that of the Mr. W. R. Galbraith.
My year of works in Civil Engineering has been very practical and beneficial. The salary offered will enable me to have a good variety of works, and this line of work offers me opportunities of interesting and distinctive experience in the profession. I should feel very thankful if you would kindly bring your influence to bear on the matter.
I was employed in some good work under the influence of some civil engineers on railways. Being down here has been very beneficial for my practical experience. The appointment as an Engineer with a good salary would be particularly advantageous.
By the time I leave, if you would kindly bring your influence to obtain good testimonials from Messrs. Gathaith Church, through their good offices, and help me to get on, as you have done before.
